MDI was conceived and sponsored by IFCI in 1973 as a training institute for enhancing managerial capabilities of business managers and to impart training in modern management to entrepreneurs and technocrats entering industry. In its initial years, the Institute mainly catered to the training requirements of working executives. A two year full-time Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) was introduced in the year 1994.

Over the years, MDI has evolved into an Integrated Business School specializing in the areas of management education, training, research and consultancy. It is rated as one of the top Business Schools of the country. Besides conducting training programmes, the faculty of the Institute is also involved in consultancy and research work. In the past decade, MDI has embarked upon new initiatives, building linkages with industry, the corporate world and the international academic community. It has focused on improving the quality of its programmes, gaining international recognition, intellectual wealth creation, and attracting quality resources, clients and constituents. The guiding philosophy behind all the academic activities of the Institute, therefore, has been to strive to inculcate professionalism in management and to enhance the effectiveness of organizations.
